Seasonal Wellness

It might seem counterintuitive that a time of holiday celebrations and traditions is also a time of sadness and stress for so many of us. Holidays can evoke feelings of nostalgia, which can also result in comparisons to an "ideal" where we feel we fall short. Recent losses such as the death of a loved one can feel amplified and especially painful for those in mourning.

Strategies to boost our sense of control and contentment don't have to be complicated. Consider some of the suggestions below to help ease the stress and sadness that may be hitting hard this time of year.

Be flexible regarding expectations, both for yourself and others. If you don't feel like preparing a meal for the family, let them know. What alternatives can they offer? It's also ok to not send holiday cards or wrap mountains of gifts, even if these are "expected" actions.

Move your body. Movement does not have to be formal exercise, if that is not your thing. But keeping active boosts our mood and our physical bodies. Consider gentle yoga or stretching (find online options if going to a studio is not for you), walking, or biking.

Be aware of food choices. Know when you might be using food to relieve stress. Holiday indulgences don't need to be guilt-inducing, but focusing our attention on healthy options when we can balances out the splurges we all enjoy. Focus on feeling good, and don't try to lose weight during the holidays.

Don't isolate. While it's fine to decline invitations to events and gatherings that might be difficult, it is also important to reach out and connect in ways that are manageable. Even brief interactions with friends, family, or neighbors can boost our mood and help us regain perspective.

Talk about your loss. Sharing memories and saying the person's name can help process grief that may be heavy. Finding friends who understand can go a long way. If needed, talk to a professional counselor about dealing with loss.
