March is National Professional Social Work Month

The month of March is National Professional Social Work Month, a time to honor the profession of social work. The theme this year is Social Work: Compassion + Action, and here at Enchanted Sky Hospice we can’t think of a better theme to describe the contributions of hospice social workers.

Social Work Month is a great time to learn and reflect on the profession's many positive contributions to hospice care. Social workers support the holistic well-being of patients and families through words and actions. This includes tending to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs that each deserve a place of honor when life draws to a close. Knowing how to talk with patients and families, each with their own unique needs, is a talent of the heart that grows from experience and education.

Hospice social work is a balancing act. They manage administrative work as well as family grief. They advocate for patients, educate the community, and support a range of needs that can shift in a moment. They create an atmosphere where people feel comfortable and supported during what may be the most challenging times of their lives.

Caring for one another at end of life means honoring the lives we have lived, while being realistic about end of life needs. Whether helping loved ones through the shadows of grief, or listening to a patient sharing favorite memories and goodbyes, they demonstrate resilience and grace that characterizes their profession.

At Enchanted Sky Hospice, our social workers are part of a team that values one another and the contributions they make. Our daily work depends on the stamina, smarts, and generous spirit that our social workers bring each day and every moment. National Professional Social Work Month is our opportunity to say "thank you" for their valuable contributions to the lives they touch.
